Freight Forwarding 101 : Back To Basics

  • What is freight forwarding?
freight forwarderforwarder, or forwarding agent is a person or company that organizes shipments for individuals or other companies and may also act as a carrier. A forwarder is often not active as a carrier and acts only as an agent, in other words, as a third-party logistics provider that dispatches shipments via asset-based carriers and arranges space for these shipments. Carrier types include ships, airplanes, trucks, and railroads.
(They send X from point A to point B, and sometimes to point C or all the way to point Z.)
  • What does a forwarder do?
A typical day for a freight forwarder would consist of talking with clients and warehouses around the world. The forwarder would then take this information and pass it along to the appropriate party or parties. Along with making sure that the freight the client is importing or exporting gains entry into the country, a freight forwarder also usually arranges for said freight to be picked up and delivered to the final consignee’s place of business. This requires contacting trucking companies, rail lines and even sometimes exporting the goods to a different country for final delivery.
(Basically, the forwarder solves all the headaches for you while you sit back and wait for you cargo to arrive.)
  • What problems does the forwarder encounter?
Freight forwarding is subject to its own set of problems. For example, there is always the possibility of damage to goods while in transit mode. While such damages can be avoided by ensuring right packaging of goods, they can lead to huge financial losses if not given attention.
Another problem that can arise  is the pilferage or theft of goods in transit mode. This can also lead to major losses and though it is not completely avoidable, chances of such occurrences are low and can be prevented by avoiding specification of brand names on packages.
(Yes, modern day pirates do exist.)
  • Who uses the services of a forwarder?
Freight forwarders are a safe bet when considering international freight transportation as certified forwarders are well educated regarding the right packing, cheapest costs, cargo insurance and all such factors that ensure safety and prompt delivery of cargo.
Freight forwarders assist manufacturers and exporters in more ways than one as they take complete responsibility of the forwarding process and handle all legal and documentation processes, thus making it an easy task for clients.
